South San Francisco Italian American Athletic Club
Area: San Mateo (South San Francisco)
Year: circa 1940
Description: "Baseball Team Becomes Honorable"
Proudly, we present to our readers our valuable baseball team, "Italian American Athletic Club" of South San Francisco. This photograph was taken last Sunday after their shining victory against the formidable team, "Redman", also of South San Francisco.
On their feet from left to right: Beltrami, Director General Sport (Manager); Petrosky, Goudy, Pastorelli, Plumtree, Honorable Farrel, Judge of the Court of South San Francisco; Fambrini and Signorelli. On the knees, from left to right: Medeghini, Caviglia, Nebiolini, Welte, Ayon, Petrocchi. In the middle the mascot L. Ringue.
In the presence of 1500 hundred fans of the I.A.A. Club of South San Francisco, they beat the "Redman" team 17 to 11.... A deserved victory.
They went on to the field as underdogs, with the sentiment of the crowd as a team having already lost. The Italian American Athletic Club last Sunday achieved a shining victory over "Redmen", also of South San Francisco
If you consider the entire population of South San Francisco, the number of the spectators present at the game suggests the strong popularity of both teams.
The game was of real interest and the fans were anxiously waiting. It could not have been any other way given the rivalry between the two teams.
The game was played at the new "Playground" (Field) called "Municipal Ground", which was inaugurated last Sunday with a conventional pre-game for this occasion. Present were Honorable Mayor A. J. Eschelbach, Police Captain, Louise Belloni and the Trustee, R. Tibbets.
The victory of the team, IAA Club, left many surprised, even the biggest supporters, and naturally it was a great disillusion for the people who bet for the rival team.
Below is the detail of the results for the memorable games played:
Back row (left to right): Beltrami, Director General Sport (mgr.); Petrosky, Goudy, Pastorelli, Plumtree, Honorable Farrel, Judge of the Court of South San Francisco; Fambrini and Signorelli.

Description: Old city ballpark on Crystal Springs Road.
*Check the present day ballpark of San Bruno within the same album to see difference.
As can be seen in this 1940s photo, cars could be driven to the baseball field to be used as observation sites. In 1988 this field was named the Tom Lara field.
The San Bruno City Council approved $18,600 for purchase of 23 acres of land from the Mills' Estate to be used as a city park. The city park on El Camino/Jenevein was to be developed for business buildings. In November 1947 the foundation was poured for a rec building but the first floor was not completed until 1955. The roof was completed in October 1957, and the 2nd floor was open January 1958.
The 20 acres of City Park had been acquired in the early 1940s but the baseball diamond was the main attraction. Cars could drive up to the edge of the park and when it got dark, lights were turned on while the players completed the game.

Western Pipe and Steel Co., 1927. In 1917 Western Pipe and Steel bought Schaw-Batcher Pipe Works Company. Located on Butler Road (later listed as 1050 Oyster Point Blvd., at the same location). From 1940-1945, they built 45 ships in 48 months for the Maritime Commission during World War II, including CIB's and C3's. In 1948 the company became Consolidated Western Steel Co., a division of United States Steel., and in 1964, became known as United States Steel, American Bridge Division. The plant was now a rolling mill. The steel was made elsewhere and then was sent to this location to be reformed. In 1983 the plant was closed and torn down. - South San Francisco Public Library
