Bakersfield
Combs Bros.
Area: Kern (Bakersfield)
Year: 1949
Description: Combs Bros., an oilfield service business, provided labor and equipment to Kern County oil field companies going back to 1935 in the midst of the depression. It is a true Grapes of Wrath story as they hired "Okies" out of their tents camped along Highway 99. The company's first contract was to build a farm labor camp in Weedpatch, Ca. The company remained the go-to oilfield service in Kern County where at one time there was more oil extracted than from the entire state of Texas, this until the mid-80's.
