Fortuna Volunteer Fire Department (Single Ladies) team
Area: Humboldt (Fortuna)
Year: 1911 (May 1)
Description: The FVFD's Single Ladies' Ball team was a good-natured spoof of Fortuna's real Single Ladies' baseball team, which played against the Married Ladies in 1910 and 1911. The FVFD team, according to the Humboldt Beacon, "turned out to be young men dressed to represent young ladies of the town. [Guy] Brown's attempts to play ball, while handicapped with a hobble skirt, were more than laughable. The whole five innings were a scream." (Courtesy of FVFD.)

Fortuna vs. Scotia
Area: Humboldt (Fortuna)
Year: 1910
Description: The Humboldt County baseball league included teams from Arcata, Blue Lake, Eureka, Ferndale, Fortuna, and Scotia. A 1910 article in the Humboldt Beacon reported that a Fortuna vs. Scotia game in Fortuna would be "called early so that the Scotia team can take the evening train from home" and so that "the game may be over before sun gets far enough in the west to hamper the fielders in their work."
